We all know the tonic & gin was invented for its medicinal properties, in order to help the troops ingest quinine to prevent the then rampant malaria. But it was actually their wave riding counterparts in the Navy that helped spread the popular drink around the globe.
By adding lemon juice to the citrus ingredients, the drink was considered a tonic to prevent scurvy brought on by a lack of vitamin C – a high risk factor for sailors at sea for great lengths of time. By the 18th century, every naval vessel was required by law to carry a certain quantity of the spirit. Since then its been taken and adapted into the drink we know and love today.
Although there are no troops at Lighthouse gin, there may indeed be a few sailors, guided home by their beacon. We’ve paired together the Lighthouse Gin with East Imperial Yuzu Tonic to bump up your Vit C intake. The citrus notes from the tonic compliment the magnificent citrus accents of the gin without overpowering.
